If you have come to Thailand and you missed tasting this recipe, perhaps you missed the essence of what this country is all about. Somtum or Green Papaya Salad is a Thai traditional cuisine which is popular all over the country and which comes in different variations the most popular of which are those with either dried shrimps or salted crabs or the combination of both.

In Thailand, green papaya salad is made using a clay mortar, wooden pestle and a spatula. Smash a clove of garlic first. Then add green beans and halved cherry tomatoes. Pound a few times just to bruise the beans and get the juice out of the tomatoes. Add chili peppers and crush them just enough to release the hotness, unless you like your salad really hot. Add the green papaya, dried shrimp, toasted peanuts, fish sauce, lime juice and palm sugar. Use the pestle to push the mixture up in the mortar and the spatula to push it down so that the mixture is mixed well. (ThaiTable.com)
The preparation is as quick and easy as 1,2,3 so when you come to visit anywhere in Thailand...don't miss this Thai papaya salad.

That's an interesting way of making a salad. I wonder if I could find a Thai restaurant here in the Philippines that have that on the menu. Visiting via TT.

haven't tried the Thai Papaya Salad yet, and it looks like the PH papaya pickles with a twist... :) the Thai food that I like most are their Tom Yum Soup, Thai green curry and the classic Thai green mango salad.. :P
My friend already told me about this Thai salad, and i am planning to visit Thai late this year or early next year, ill definitely include this into the list to try in Thailand :)
